UBA Essay Competition for Secondary School Students

United Bank of Africa, UBA Essay Competition for secondary school students in Nigeria is now in its 10th year. The National Essay Competition, targeted at senior secondary students in Nigeria is organized annually, as part of UBA Foundation’s education initiative which is aimed at promoting the reading culture and encouraging healthy and intellectual competition amongst secondary school students in Nigeria and across Africa.

UBA Essay Competition 2020 Topic is: “Do you think that the lock down during the Covid-19 pandemic was an essential measure in spite of the hardship it brought economically? What would you have done differently and why?”

Selection Criteria and Eligibility

  • Be a Secondary School Student in Nigeria
  • Must submit a handwritten essay (750 words MAX)
  • Must submit a passport photograph
  • Must submit a copy of a birth certificate, National ID or passport

Selection procedure:

  • Entries received for the competition will be reviewed by a distinguished panel of judges made up of professors from reputable Nigerian Universities, who will then shortlist 12 essays for further assessment.
  • Following this, a second round of competition will involve the 12 finalists who will write a second supervised essay from which three best essays will be selected as the overall winners from the 12 finalists emerged from the first round of the competition

  • Applicant must submit their completed contact information (Name, Age, School, Address of school, Telephone Number, Residential Address and Email Address).
  • Applicants must attach photocopies of their original birth certificates or international passport data page.

  • The first prize for the UBA Essay Competition is a N2.5 million educational grant.

        When i was going through the information and to fill the necessary form given i saw add file to an essay …….
        And i was confused are we to submit it there or just to fill the form and submit sir.

        1. You are to submit an handwritten essay via upload if you are using the UBA portal, however, I would suggest for writing your essay, scan it and save as a PDF then upload.

        1. I don’t think there are any separate form for junior or senior secondary school students, just write your essay and send it to UBA, that is all.

      I graduated from high school in 2013, and up till now I have not gained admission in to any higher institution. I’m even writing this year wassce because I have been failing mathematics. I’m now an old man, may I register?

  2. Good evening…it is stated there that a National ID should be included. What if tge student don’t have one. What others means of identification can be used?

    1. The only national i.d. a student can have is the international passport. You can reach out to the nearest UBA branch for more clarification in that regard.

    1. Where in Abuja can we submit it?
    2. Our details like name, phone number etc, should it be on the same paper as the essay is on or separately or on the envelope?
    3. Aside from the already given title, can we come up with a title of our own?

  8. sir please, I went to that place that the essay is supposed to be submitted, they wrote only senior secondary school 1,2and3 while I am in junior secondary school 2,what will I do plan?

    1. How do you take down an already submitted essay if you realise it needs editing . Or can I simply upload the edited one and indicate that the first is cancelled.

  13. Good evening sir,there is no option to include our age when trying to fill the form online. Also, I edited my response but I couldn’t delete the previously uploaded pages so I added new pages. I hope the duplication doesn’t matter
